Mining Industry Reporter Shares Insights on Day One of Mining Indaba 2025

.

In an exclusive interview with Project CBNews, veteran mining industry reporter Liabo Setho provided comprehensive coverage of the first day at this year's Mining Indaba 2025 conference, offering valuable insights into the current state of South Africa's mining sector.

Speaking about the day's events, Setho detailed her extensive coverage schedule, which began at 6 AM with preliminary reports and the opening ceremony. "Before the minister's opening address, I was already on the ground providing context about the mining conference for various SABC programs, including Morning Live," Setho explained.

During the conference, Setho engaged with key stakeholders, including representatives from the Minerals Council of South Africa, which oversees approximately 90% of the country's mining operations. The Council's recently published annual facts and figures report revealed that mining's contribution to GDP has decreased to 6%, lower than the previous year's figures. Setho highlighted several challenges facing the industry: "The sector has been significantly impacted by various factors, including severe load shedding during the first quarter, ongoing commodity pricing volatility, and logistical constraints with Transnet affecting goods transportation.

The emerging water crisis has also become a growing concern for mining operations." Discussing her methodology for comprehensive coverage, Setho emphasized the importance of source development and networking. "After filing stories for both radio and television, I engage with other journalists and attend ministerial meetings. Mining companies often host networking events where we can learn about upcoming projects and develop reliable industry contacts," she explained.

The reporter's day typically concludes with strategic networking sessions and preparation for the next day's coverage, often requiring early starts at 5 AM. This rigorous schedule reflects the demanding nature of mining industry journalism and the importance of maintaining comprehensive coverage of this crucial economic sector. Looking ahead, Setho will continue her coverage of the Mining Indaba 2025, providing Project CBNews audiences with in-depth analysis of developments in South Africa's mining industry.
