Gauteng Traffic Police Helicopter Unit Pivotal in Thwarting Bank Robbery and CIT Heist
In a display of swift action and inter-agency cooperation, the Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP) Air Wing played a crucial role in two separate crime incidents on Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

The morning began with reports of a potential bank robbery at a Capitec branch in Alberton. GTP Saturation units and Gauteng Traffic Wardens (GTW) responded promptly, arriving to find SAPS Vaal K-9 unit and CPS Security already on scene. Initial reports suggested the suspect was attempting to escape through the ceiling.

The GTP Air Wing was immediately dispatched, utilizing its helicopter to secure the rooftop. This aerial support proved invaluable as a suspect was discovered trapped in the ventilation system, leading to a successful arrest. While still engaged at the Alberton scene, the Air Wing received information about a Cash-in-Transit (CIT) robbery in Tembisa. Responding swiftly, the helicopter arrived to find a cash van had been bombed. One suspect was reported injured, while others had fled the scene. A lookout was issued for two vehicles: a white C-Class and an E-Class Mercedes Benz. The helicopter's aerial surveillance quickly located one of the suspect vehicles abandoned near the crime scene. Ground units, directed by the Air Wing, investigated and confirmed the white Mercedes was reported stolen. Further intelligence led the helicopter to a house on Ghana Street in Welamlabo, Tembisa, where the second Mercedes was found in a garage. SAPS and Ekurhuleni Metro Police secured this location.

A 9mm pistol with ammunition and a magazine, believed to be linked to the CIT heist, were recovered from the abandoned white Mercedes. As of this report, a manhunt is ongoing for the suspects who escaped.

Ofentse Morwane, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, emphasized the importance of helicopter support in crime-fighting efforts. "The integration of helicopters enhances our ability to respond swiftly and efficiently to crime incidents," Morwane stated. "These aerial units are invaluable for monitoring high-crime areas, tracking suspects, and providing crucial support to ground teams during operations."

This incident highlights the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between various law enforcement agencies and the strategic use of aerial support in combating crime in Gauteng.
