Evaton West, South Africa - A grassroots campaign is set to launch in Evaton West, addressing the critical issues of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and substance abuse that have recently claimed the life of a local student. The initiative, titled "Community Breaking the Silence: Unite Against GBV and Substance Abuse," aims to galvanize residents into action and foster open dialogue about these pressing concerns.
Youth organizers, deeply affected by recent events, are spearheading the campaign. "We refuse to remain silent," said one of the coordinators, who wished to remain anonymous. "While legal processes will unfold, it's our responsibility to unite the community and confront these issues head-on."
The campaign, scheduled to launch on October 13, 2024, will feature a community awareness walk through Evaton West neighborhoods. Organizers plan to invite survivors, experts, and community leaders to speak, while also providing resources on counseling, legal aid, and rehabilitation services.
In addition to the walk, the initiative includes a series of youth-focused workshops and talks at local schools. These sessions will cover topics such as healthy relationships, consent, recognizing signs of abuse, and substance awareness. The organizers aim to train peer educators to become advocates within their social circles.
The campaign is seeking both financial and in-kind donations from the community. Contributions will support awareness campaigns, workshops, and victim support services. Organizers note that donations to their NGO may be eligible for tax deductions.
Local institutes and businesses are being invited to collaborate through expert talks, workshop facilitation, and strategic guidance. The campaign is also calling for adult mentors to engage with at-risk youth, emphasizing the importance of positive role models in the community.
"Let us break the silence, unite against GBV, and build a community free from abuse," the organizers stated in their announcement. "Together, we can create lasting change."
The event on October 13 is expected to draw over a thousand participants. Organizers are welcoming any form of support, including catering and branded materials from local businesses.
