Department condems the petrol bombing of the school


Free State Department of Education abhorred and condemned in a strongest possible patrol bombing of Gonyane Primary School in Mangaung, Bloemfontein early this morning, 6 January 2023.

R300 000 worth new Learning  and Teaching Support Materials (LTSM) for the new academic year were burnt  at the school hall.

The school is a full section 21 status.

A used patrol bomb was found next to the burnt stationery. Patrol bomb were also thrown   into the administration block. Attacks on children school facilities are unacceptable and can be a grave violation of children’s rights to education.School facilities should always be a safe place for every child, where children can learn, play and grow to reach their full potential.

We call on communities to protect schools from all forms of  criminality at all times and under all circumstances.

Due to loadshedding number of schools in the province have been the target of criminals,  breaking in , vandalising and stealing school propeties.

 The motive for torching of Gonyane Primary School is not yet known.

Police are investigating the matter.
