In the heart of the Vaal region, a tragic incident has sparked a powerful movement to confront the scourge of gender-based violence. Boitumelo Modimoeng "Tumi", a local community leader, shared the harrowing story of Mome Mofokeng a 19-year-old who was brutally raped and murdered at a party.

In the heart of the Vaal region, a tragic incident has sparked a powerful movement to confront the scourge of gender-based violence. Boitumelo Modimoeng " Tumi", a local community leader, shared the harrowing story of Mome Mofokeng, a 19-year-old who was brutally raped and murdered at a party.

The details of Mome Mofokeng case are horrific - she was invited to a gathering, assaulted, and then killed when she tried to report the crime. Tumi was deeply shaken by this senseless loss of life, but she has channeled her grief into action. Together with her community in Ward 28, Tumi is organizing a picnic-style event on October 13th, which would have been Mome Mofokeng birthday.

The goal of this gathering is twofold: to honor Mome Mofokeng memory and to kickstart a much-needed dialogue about gender-based violence in the Vaal. Tumi emphasizes that this is not simply a party, but a chance for the community to come together, reflect, and find solutions. "We need to call each other out and find a place where we can all meet and have this table," she says.

The event will feature speakers, including mental health professionals and community leaders, who will guide discussions around the root causes of violence and ways to foster a culture of care and respect. Tumi hopes to shift mindsets, particularly among young people, and inspire a collective commitment to end the cycle of abuse.

As part of the event, there will be a two-hour community walk, symbolizing the Vaal's determination to reclaim its streets and stand up for the safety of all residents, especially women and girls. Tumi encourages attendees to bring picnic items, as well as donations of clothing, school supplies, or other necessities that can support victims and empower young people.

"We need people to see each other as human beings, and that is not for sale," Tumi says passionately. "What I need for my community is not for sale. I just need people to say, 'That's my sister. That's my brother. I'm gonna look out for this one. I have your back.'" The Vaal community's response to this tragedy exemplifies the power of grassroots action and the potential for collective healing. By coming together, sharing their stories, and committing to meaningful change, they hope to prevent similar incidents and create a safer, more nurturing environment for all.
