Meyerton, June 4, 2024 – The community of Meyerton came together in solemn remembrance on Tuesday evening, honoring the lives of three children who tragically lost their lives in a devastating motor accident on May 28th. Omolemo Lesenyeho-Zondo and Nondumiso Mpho Mbatha, students from Meyerton Primary, and Lesedi Khanye from Greenacres Private College High School, lost their lives when a collision involving two cash-in-transit trucks and a minibus taxi occurred on Pierneef Boulevard around 2 pm.
The harrowing incident unfolded as one of the armored trucks attempted to overtake, veering onto the pavement and overturning. The taxi, carrying 14 learners, was struck by the overturned vehicle, resulting in the loss of the three young lives. Additionally, a female motorist sustained injuries, along with the truck drivers and some of the learners on board the taxi.
At the candle lighting service held at the accident site on Pierneef Boulevard, between Hoogenhout and Andrew Murray Street in Kookrus, Meyerton, the community gathered to mourn the profound loss and honor the memories of the children. Councilor Erline Jordaan welcomed the attendees, expressing the heaviness in their hearts and acknowledging the void left by the absence of the vibrant young lives.
Colonel Mohale, the Meyerton Station Commander, offered words of comfort and encouragement, extending condolences on behalf of the South African Police Service (SAPS). He acknowledged the tragedy's occurrence during Child Protection Week, a time dedicated to safeguarding the well-being of young ones. Despite the questions and uncertainties, he reminded the community to be grateful for the time they had with the children, who were "borrowed" from the Lord.
Executive Mayor Peter Teixeira of Midvaal expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families, describing the trauma of witnessing their anguish during the recent burials. He emphasized that the loss of these children, who held the promise of becoming future leaders and prominent figures in the community, has left a profound scar on the town's heart. Teachers and learners have sought counseling in the wake of this tragedy, which has brought immense pain to Meyerton.
The Mayor assured the families that they are not alone in their grief, as the entire community stands united in support. He praised the outpouring of solidarity, reflecting the town's unity and care for one another. As the community held their candles high, the atmosphere was heavy with sorrow, punctuated by the sound of tears and a somber song, "Africa Back to God," echoing through the vigil site.
In the face of this devastating loss, the community of Meyerton has come together, drawing strength from one another and offering unwavering support to the grieving families. The memory of these three young lives, extinguished far too soon, will forever remain etched in the hearts of their loved ones and the broader community.
